Everyday, I've got at least 4 or 5 messages telling me some deviant has added "The Magician - Edward Elric" among my deviations as one of their favourites.
It is in fact (as I'm looking right now) the 7th most popular deviation of all time when searching "Edward Elric". And yay for it, of course. But there's something annoying in it.
No one of my other deviations gets ever a fave (perhaps another of the Tarot Cards or my 'Smoking in Smoking' pieces), and that one (and the other ones mentioned) are the ones I'm not totally responsible for ('cause I did not draw the images but took them rendered in order to make the composition). So I'm frustrated as a 'maybe'-artist. Well, I've never seen myself as a real artist, but I have intended to practice in order to possibly become one some day (not profesionally but of course as an amateur), so it's a little bit frustrating.
Anyway, it's been a long time since I uploaded my last deviation... I haven't been able to practice much (college ._.) and... well, dunno. XD I just felt frustrated about what I said.
I even doubt if people stop and read that I DID NOT draw that, 'cause I still get comments telling me I did a great job with the expression and so on...
*Sigh*
Devious Comments
I admit though that it's a little disheartening at times to see people flock to something that you either didn't do or didn't do fully. One of the readers of my fanfiction drew a picture of one of the scenes and so I put it up in my gallery. Guess which one is the most favorited/viewed out of all the things in my gallery? Uh huh. Anything you create of a popular character like Edward Elric will get attention, even if not quite as much as that.
Best advice I can give you is to not let that discourage you. You're on a site overflowing with anime freaks, and they act like it too. *snickers* Just keep drawing the stuff YOU want to draw, whether you get attention for it or not. Art is art for a reason: to please yourself, not to please them. They are only secondary in comparison with your own happiness, so draw what makes you happy first and foremost, and if you get attention, great! If not, oh well, no loss. You enjoyed creating it after all, and that's all that matters.
Of course, if you want to start winning yourself a following, doing something of Edward Elric periodically won't hurt your chances.
Anyway, keep up the good work, keep your chin up, and smile.
That's all I thought, or just wanted to convince myself of, and now I've read it, said by another person, I can't but fully get convinced by it.
I really do enjoy what I do, and I like it (well, there are things I do not like, of course XD). My objective is not to impressionate the masses or whatever, is just to practice, learn and enjoy doing the art I'm capable of.
Well, dunno. I did think that before, but your comment has indeed encouraged me even more to maintain that attitude.
Thank you so much, ~Reincarnated-Al!
I've discovered that my favorite art style is to draw realistically, so I never draw anime style even if I'm doing FMA fan art. Go figure, hehe. My realistic fan art drawings don't get nearly so much attention as the anime-ish drawings I upload from fans of my fan fiction, but oh well. At least I'm enjoying it, and I still get the occasional friend to have their jaw hit the floor, so that makes it quite worth it.
Anyway, good luck on your art as well! Hope that you figure out precisely what you want to do.
